Let the Sparks Fly

1 Kings 18:16–24

We allways follow the path of our greatest poassion

v. 17, “When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, ‘Is it you, you troubler of Israel?’”

Passion Is Unwilling to Blend In.

  1.  During the time of the divided Kingdoms
    1. Northern kingdom said to have ruled in evil
    2. At this time Ahab is king - more wicked than those of the past 62 years
  2. God needed a prophet of passion, at lease as great as the passion of the prophets of Baal
  3. In Ahab's eyes, Elijah was causing problems and was the problem because he was unwilling to blend in.
  4. "passion is unwilling to blend in"
  5. Proverbs "God hates the hands of those who shed innocent blood"

Matthew 713,14 “Enter by the narrow gate.  For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.  For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”

God does not call us to blend in but to stand out.

Passion Is Also Unwilling to Back Down.

Our culture calls for more freedom and authority with less responsibility

vv. 19 & 20, “Now therefore send and gather all Israel to me at Mount Carmel, and the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.  So Ahab sent to all the people of Israel and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel.”

odds of 850 to 1, falses prophets of a false God/against/1 prophet of the true God

1 Corinthians 15:58 , “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.”

v. 24, “And you call upon the name of your god, and I will call upon the name of the LORD, and the God who answers by fire, he is God…”

Passion Will Empower a Believer to Burn Bright.

"you can stand me up against the gates of hell, but I won't back down" - lyrics to a Tom Pety song

Elijah was being threatened likely with the loss of his life if he was wrong & refused to back down

- what does culture threaten us with?

   - bad reputation, tell everyone we are wrong, call us bad names, tell everyone we are intollerent.

Passion phrohibits those of Christ from backing down just becasue things have become hard

had Elijah backed down, God would have had no prophet standing for him

An issue of our actions not honoring God, it goes much deeper than our actions, it begins with our passion

Psalm 39:3 “My heart became hot within me.  As I mused the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue.”
